Why do we need Locum Doctors and Pharmacists?

You may have noticed that when you go to the pharmacy, or the General practitioners surgery, that the personnel has changed. There is a very good reason for this. The main thing is not to worry, the pharmacy or practice will have brought in a Locum to cover the absent medical professional. They will be just as qualified as the original person. The Locum is brought in to cover the Doctor, Nurse, Surgeon or Pharmacist but only on a temporary basis. You can be sure that they will have Locum Insurance, possibly from a company like https://www.mprs-uk.com/products/general-practice/top-up-locum-insurance/.

The question is why do we need a Locum? When you learn that there are anywhere near three thousand and five hundred at work in the NHS, every day, you can see that it is very much a regular practice. What is the need for so many?

Put simply, continuous professional development. There is a requirement for all professionals to expand themselves within their field, get updates on new developments or just have a refresh on what they already do. There is also the question of absence. Medical people get ill, have families and need a holiday too. Locum’s fill the gaps in these essential services whilst they are away.
