Three ways to care for older people in the winter

The elderly are at greater risk than other members of society. The elderly often require assistance with everyday tasks that we consider to be normal.

The risks for older people also increase in the winter. In the winter, illnesses can become life-threatening to elderly people. The weather can also make outdoor conditions more hazardous, resulting in more accidents and falls. Many of these accidents can be caused by slippery pavements or reduced visibility due to bad weather conditions.

How can you keep an older person safe during winter? Here are some ideas…

Visit and stay in touch. Loneliness can be a big problem for older people. Keeping in touch with them by visiting, calling or video chatting regularly will help to boost their mental health. It’s important for older people to stay mentally engaged as well as physically. Offer to take them out, whether it’s shopping, bingo or a local community group.

Make sure their home is suitable and safe – this may involve making changes to the house – for example, adding grab rails around the shower or bath to prevent falls and making everything easily accessible. Consider if getting someone to visit regularly, like a carer, would be a good idea. Encourage them to stay active – Physical and mental health will improve if they are physically active. This depends on their abilities but even a gentle stroll or some light gardening is incredibly beneficial.  Mental activities such as puzzles or games are also good.
