Hockey is a growing game in the UK, particularly in Wales, where the women’s team has seen much success over the last few years. Nevertheless, we have not yet reached the point where players can be professionals. In addition to juggling playing and training for their club and the national team, they also have grueling day jobs or degrees to work toward. You may be surprised to discover the professional talents of these players off the court. From teachers and dentists to IT consultants, this is one diverse and talented bunch of hockey players.
Sporting Jobs
It may come as little surprise that some members of the squad have jobs within the realm of sports and fitness. The Wales National Captain Abi Welsford is a PE teacher in Bridgend and Goal-keeper Ella Jackson works as an assistant physiotherapist, whilst her teammate Sian French is also a physiotherapist. Sarah Jones works in the admin side of sport as a Project Coordinator at British Tennis, whilst midfielder Danielle Jordan is a Sports Coach.
Students
Other members of the squad have to juggle their studies with their sporting roles. This includes Eloise Laity, who is studying Chemistry and has already had to delay some exams in order to fit in both commitments. Fellow students on the team include Hannah Cozens, who is studying Sports Science and Geography, and Beth Bingham, who is studying Sport and Exercise Science. Juggling a degree with a sporting career is not unusual, with many famous footballers doing the same.
Diverse professionals
In addition to those working in the realm of sports and studying, there are a number of more diverse jobs. This includes that of forward Phoebe Richards, who works in Human Factors and Ergonomics; Tina Evans, who is a senior IT Consultant; and Sophie Clayton, who is a qualified dentist. Participation Co-ordinator Lisa Daley, aspiring Financial Planning Advisor Jo Westwood, and Vice-Captain Leah Wilkinson, who is a history teacher, are all busy at work during the week when they are not carrying out essential field hockey drills. The team competed on home soil for the Women’s EuroHockey Championship II, and they have since returned to their day jobs and studies as they continue to play for their clubs, too.
